A survey published this week by JF Etter (Institute of Social and Preventative Medicine, University of Geneva) suggests that electronic cigarettes help smokers to quit.

The results come as no surprise to the people who use the device.

Etter noted in his survey that more studies are needed on electronic cigarettes. The Food and Drug Administration issued a press release in July of 2009 suggesting that the inhaled vapor from the electronic cigarette contained carcinogens and toxic chemicals. Many studies completed since have shown otherwise.

Dr. Murray Laugesen, of Health New Zealand, had harsh criticism for the FDA’s press release, saying the agency had “. . . condemned electronic cigarettes for containing cancer-causing nitrosamines. However, the levels in FDA-approved nicotine gum and patch are similar, and in cigarettes, much higher (up to 5000 times higher).”

According to the American Association of Public Health Physicians (AAPHP), “Experience suggests that e-cigarettes may be more acceptable to smokers than the currently available pharmaceutical alternatives. A smoker can secure almost all the health benefits of quitting if he or she transitions to an e-cigarette.”

It’s a great alternative,” she says. “It still gives you the action of smoking — you inhale, you blow out — so it’s not like a patch or chewing gum, which is something completely different. So I would, as a smoker, recommend it to smokers [who] are trying to give up. Most definitely.”

The Doctors do stress, however, that if it is approved, the electronic cigarette should only be used as an alternative to the real thing, because the nicotine in it can still be harmful to your health.

Sandy recieved her blu eCig Starter kit a few weeks ago and wrote in to tell us her story.

For the past 15 years I have smoked at least a pack a day, some days a pack and a half. I have tried quitting more times than I can count. Tried the patch, tried the gum, and tried the medicine.  Typically I would last about a week to two weeks. Once I made it over a month. Yes the nicotine was a factor in my failures but the stop smoking aids did help with the nicotine cravings. The biggest contributor to my failures was that I missed physically smoking. —- I missed having my pack of cigarettes. I missed pulling out a cigarette, settling in and putting the cigarette to my mouth. I missed the whirls of smoke and holding the cigarette in my hand. I felt like I was depriving myself of an old faithful friend. I felt lost, empty and bored because this physical act had become such an engrained activity in my life and now it was gone. Every time I failed in my attempts to quit I always said to myself if only there was a way to smoke but not smoke….

I hated the nasty smell of the cigarette and how it made me and all my stuff smell disgusting. I hated the tons of burn holes I had done in my years of smoking. I hated the ashes all over the place. I hated the HUGE amounts of money I was spending on this nasty habit.  I hated myself because I knew that I was continuing to do something that I knew was bad for me, something that could and likely would cause me to have an agonizing death.  With all of this I still couldn’t get rid of the desire for the act of physically smoking.

What I have been looking for for years is FINALLY here!!!

Ecigs—- no more nasty smell, no more burn holes, no more second hand smoke, no more ashes. Everything I love in a cigarette without everything I hate! I get the nicotine I want and the security of my pack sitting there. I get to pull out a cigarette, settle in and smoke but not smoke!

And the cost is cheaper than any pack I have ever bought in my 15 years of smoking!

So to all of you who continue to smoke the old fashion way it is time to see and experience what cigarettes have evolved to.
